T-Mobile has quietly delisted Go5G plans from its retail systems and rolled out a puzzling new policy around taxes and fees.
Originally expected to be replaced in April by the Experience More and Experience Beyond packages, Go5G plans are now officially grandfathered, meaning no new activations through retail channels, even as customer-care reps may still help a few through over-the-phone enrollments.
With taxes and fees now excluded from every new plan, T-Mobile’s “What You See Should Be What You Pay” promise feels like a relic of the past.
Why Go5G Plans Were Grandfathered
- April Launch of Experience More & Beyond: When T-Mobile introduced its Experience More and Experience Beyond tiers in late April, industry watchers assumed these tax-free plans would simply replace Go5G plans.
- Employee Discouragement: Reports emerged that staff were subtly steered away from activating Go5G plans, a sign the old offerings were on their way out.
- Website Removal in May: By early May, the Go5G plans vanished from t-mobile.com, though phone and chat enrollments remained—until now.
Despite claims that the new Experience plans deliver “more value,” the absence of included taxes and fees means customers often see a lower upfront price but face higher bills once add-ons and surcharges kick in.
The Impact on New and Existing Customers
- Existing Subscribers: If you’re already on Go5G plans, you’ll continue to enjoy your current rates and included taxes & fees. These grandfathered plans remain intact—just don’t expect any upgrades.
- New Activations: Retail staff lost system access as of June 13, ending in-store or online sign-ups for Go5G plans. Only calling customer care might still yield a rare exception.
- Billing Confusion Ahead: From June 18, T-Mobile is phasing out tax-included watch and tablet plans, offering only tax-excluded versions. You can mix taxed and untaxed lines, but billing statements may become harder to decipher.
What This Means for Watch & Tablet Lines
T-Mobile is also retiring older watch and tablet plans with included taxes. As of June 18:
- Only Tax-Excluded Options Available: All new wearable and mobile internet lines (watches, tablets) will exclude taxes and fees.
- Mixed Tax Bundles Permitted: You can combine legacy tax-included lines with new tax-excluded lines on a single account.
- Potential Confusion: If you add a new line to your tax-included legacy plan, that new line will also be tax-included—despite the shift.
T-Mobile’s Premium Pivot
With the sunset of Go5G plans and the dismantling of “What You See Should Be What You Pay,” T-Mobile appears to be repositioning itself as a premium provider. By presenting lower base prices and then layering on fees, they deliver the perception of savings but collect more revenue per line.
