Meizu is in danger of slipping behind in the race for flagship smartphones with the Meizu 22 still not available for purchase. And with new generation devices like the Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and MediaTek Dimensity 9500 getting increasingly competitive, then Meizu 22 needs to step up if it wants to stay relevant.
The Meizu 22 was meant to make a splash with what looked like a bold new design, complete with a camera hump reminiscent of the Huawei Mate 70 RS and the Snapdragon 8 Elite that the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra was rumored to come with. It would’ve made the Meizu 22 something of an anomaly in the flagship space, delivering a combo of high-end aesthetics with top-end performance.
However, the Meizu 22 is now playing catch-up due to Meizu’s typically slow release schedules. The flagship itself remains elusive though, not even available in its fellow Chinese home market (where Meizu usually debuts first). This delay is significant – particularly with the likes of Samsung, Xiaomi and Vivo lining up their Snapdragon 8 Elite 2 and Dimensity 9500-toting models to launch in September and October 2025.
One striking aspect of the Meizu 22 are its ultra-slim bezels, which are said to measure at 1.2mm around all sides of the screen. As remarkable as it was, that edge-to-edge display is no longer unique. Leaks have suggested that future devices with newer chipsets will have similar screen designs as such, the Meizu 22 faces much more pressure to stand out.
The more Meizu postpones Meizu 22 launching date, the more time it has to lose significant implications. When that device eventually hits the market, its once-prized features may be old hat at that point, especially if you have a flood of next-gen flagships with superior, more high-end spec lists hogging all the headlines.
In order to retain its flagship shaper status MEIZU will have to pick up the pace with the release of the MEIZU 22, or it will be toast in a world that continues to spin at a truly frenetic pace.
