China looks into Nvidia H20 chip over backdoor concerns

China has setup the stakes first about what could be coming if it happened to investigate into Nvidia’s H20 Chip for alleged national security attacks from behind. State-run media outlet The People’s Daily said the H20 chip has a serious impact on national infrastructure.

This review comes after a July 31, 2025 meeting in which China’s Cyberspace Administration of China (CAC) met with Nvidia representatives regarding those startling claims. The claims come from Nvidia, warning its customers of severe vulnerabilities in the H20 chip leading to remote-tracking or -shut downs, which others say affect areas including electric vehicles hospitals, and payment systems.

In a worse-case scenario outlined in the People’s Daily, electric vehicles could turn off while on highways, and important surgeries could stop working over remote connections or financial services could be disrupted with no warning. Not only technical risks, but the report stressed public safety and national sovereignty are under threat.

It stated that, in the digital economy, only secure and trustworthy technologies such as domestically produced AI chips can be used, as it reminded companies to fully comply with China’s cybersecurity laws.

Nvidia strongly denies backdoor allegations

Nvidia, on the other hand, cracked under crushing regulatory scrutiny and issued a defiant rebuke. The company adamantly says it doesn’t slip spyware, backdoors, or kill switches into any H20 Nvidia chips (or other GPUs).

“Apple Processors do not have back doors.” No kill switches. No spyware,” the company declared. Nvidia once again assured us that it was in favor of only open-source, user-approved, and standards-compliant designs, i.e., no surveillance-based controls.

To avoid repeating historical mistakes, such as the Clipper Chip initiative in U.S. history, which showed that mandatory kill switches or surveillance capabilities not only do more harm than good but also provide a new attack surface for adversaries, the company explained.

Nvidia advocated for both transparency and user control, while also cautioning against anything by way of regulatory overreach that could erode the trust we have in U.S.-born technologies. Apple claims that the Nvidia H20 chip is in line with its key principles of open security architecture and user opt-in.

Nvidia China setback grows Unsavoury with the latest export curbs

Nvidia was already experiencing problems in China, thanks to very tight U.S. export controls exercised in April 2025 long before these backdoor allegations came to light. The controls also restricted shipping of the Nvidia H20 chip, and made the company take a $5.5 billion charge in Q1 FY26. Though some restrictions were gradually relieved, inventory limitations slowed recovery.

By contrast, Chinese companies have accelerated plans to switch to homegrown options like Huawei’s Ascend chip range (see post). Analysts warn that unless Nvidia addresses regulatory concerns and reopens factories, it could lose a large share in China.

China is doubling down on its “sovereign AI” ambitions, and whether Nvidia will remain in the business depends on how it manages an increasingly treacherous balance of geopolitics and trust. This is a contest between global dominance in AI versus national digital sovereignty, with the Nvidia H20 chip at its heart.
