Google Drive is still evolving as a great central place to store files, and now it’s a little more friendly to video creators. Google has now added Google Vids integration, enabling select Workspace users to perform fast video edits natively in the cloud. This is part of an enlarged set of features that have been adapted by Google Drive to make it a video-centric platform with Auto-Captions, thumbnails similar to those in YouTube, instant preview where each frame has its own searchable transcript and more.
The new integration adds a purple Vids icon to the top right of Drive when video is open. You click on this icon to load the video into Google Vids its here that you get tools for basic editing (e.g. trim, add text over a video or content over a video, e.g. music). Although the tools are simple, the main advantage is that all edits are cloud-based – so there’s no need to download separate video editing software. Google Vids makes a new file after edits are made and users will need to save or export the work on their own.
The service can be used to upload files in MP4, Quicktime, OGG and WebM format that are up to 35 minutes and 4GB in size. This integration isn’t coming to your free Google Drive accounts just yet — as with most of Google’s launches, it’s available to qualified Workspace domains. Eligible users include:
- Business Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Enterprise Starter, Standard, and Plus
- Essentials, Enterprise Essentials, and Enterprise Essentials Plus
- Nonprofits
- Subscribers of Gemini Education or Gemini Education Premium add-ons
- Google AI Pro and Ultra members
- Customers who purchased earlier Gemini Business or Enterprise add-ons
Google Vids integration will arrive in Workspace within 15 days. The feature is specifically here for desktop, however mobile browsers can access Google Vids, just expect some finely-tuned tapping for super detailed editing.
For the tech industry in general and video in particular, Google Drive’s foray into editing videos in the cloud via Google Vids spells the beginning of a push to make it easier to manage and create videos. Now with the ability to trim a video, add new video on top of the original and apply other edits to clips straight from Drive, creators are closer than ever to having their videos look as polished as possible, no download required. This is especially useful for companies, teachers, and content creators who work with Workspace tools, minimizing the number of steps between upload and edited output.
While it is not the strongest move, now that Google Drive’s merged with Google Vids, it is now a place not just to store stuff, but even somewhere to continent-ally create videos. The integration between Drive and Vids reduces the time users switch between tools – and spend more time creating video content with Drive’s cloud and Vids’ editing features.
