Paradox Interactive says it will address the Bloodlines 2 DLC fracas after it faced criticism for locking clans Lasombra and Toreador behind day-one content.
Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 faced controversy in its own announcement when Paradox confirmed that Lasombra and Toreador clans would be locked behind the Shadows and Silk DLC, or only accessible via the Premium Edition. This Bloodlines 2 DLC announcement immediately sparked anger from fans, since gating iconic clans behind a paywall seemed like a dirty trick to play on longtime fans.
The reaction was vicious, and the Bloodlines 2 DLC incident was quickly widely known in the gaming community. Players expressed their frustration in forums, on social media, and in Discord servers, and said that practices like this hurt the hype around what was one of the most anticipated RPGs in years.
Paradox appears to have noticed. In an official statement to the controversial DLC decision, Community Manager DebbieElla said on the official Discord channel that something will be done in response to this. “We hear your feedback regarding Lasombra and Toreador clan access and will be making some tweaks ahead of launch in response,” she added. The statement was meant to assure fans that the team is working to implement a fix, but what that solution will look like remains to be seen.
” A live Twitch presentation has been planned where we may hear further information about the state of the Bloodlines 2 DLC situation. Until that time, fans are still anxious to discover if these clans will be unlocked at no additional cost to Shadows and Silk.
I’ve recently had the opportunity to play a Bloodlines 2 demo prior to Gamescom 2105. Although many wrung hands over the change in hand behind the developers, my initial experience was actually good. The Chinese Room has apparently nailed the dark neo-noir vibe and the RPG depth that fans are hoping for. If it doesn’t quite have the hook of The Witcher 3 or Elden Ring, the sequel appears to be a pretty good, engaging action RPG with a compelling story.
The controversy over the Bloodlines 2 DLC serves as a stark reminder of what it takes to lose the trust of fans and how quickly something that is core to the gameplay experience can be locked behind a paywall. But a swift response from Paradox indicates that the studio knows how valuable goodwill with its community can be. Done right, that fix could help restore confidence in advance of the game’s release.
