Samsung‘s next big upgrade to its mid-range smartphone looks set to be the Galaxy A57, according to an early leak that indicates some interesting changes under the hood. Samsung is currently testing an Exynos 1680 chipset on a Galaxy A57 prototype, claims the report. The processor will apparently be coupled with an improved Xclipse 550 GPU.
The Galaxy A5.6 was announced in March (together with the cheaper Galaxy A3.6) two months ago, so it took Samsung less than six months to stop selling it, you see. Though Samsung has just announced it, seems like the OEM is pushing for the development process of another lower-mid range Galaxy A57 consequently to keep up with rivals in this market segment.
Exynos 1680 and GPU Upgrade
Geekbench listings confirmed this with the Galaxy A57 slated to come with the Exynos 1680, a powerful processor designed out of 8 CPU cores distributed over three clusters, similar as its predecessor. Although the leaked CPU clock speeds should not be taken as final performance indicators, the architecture puts Samsung’s efforts in power efficiency and sheer performance on show with an interesting chipset which bears its name.

But most interesting is that the Xclipse 550 GPU. The new GPU, however, is not a simple replacement of Xclipse 540 since it has only two Compute Units (CUs) as opposed to four in the previous generation. Although this reduction in the no of cores, the early OpenCL benchmark scores hint that the performance is almost comparable to the older GPU which is quite good for a device like Galaxy A57.
Leak Points to Prototype Status
The Exynos 1680 codenamed processor is believed to be the SOC Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd Full Android on S5E8865 ERD that appears in the listing. The source of the report stated that it could be a prototype for the Galaxy A5x or even an in-house development board, not representative of final hardware — now-repeatedly emphasized and reinforced with each subsequent leak.
The Galaxy A57 would likely stick to the same schedule as previous mid-range Galaxies rather than being released ahead of time, though. That said, the appearance of these benchmark leaks is only one indication that Samsung has a Galaxy A57 in testing.
