It feels like quite some time ago when Samsung and Google announced their collaboration with Qualcomm to develop an XR (Extended Reality) headset. Recently, Google introduced Android XR, the operating system that will power the headset, while Samsung showcased a prototype.
Interestingly, this headset may be much closer to being a consumer product than previously anticipated. Reports suggest that Samsung plans not only to officially unveil the headset at Galaxy Unpacked but may also provide prototypes for hands-on experience.
The prototype shown last year alongside Android XR could resemble the final product. While I wish there were a bit more creativity involved—since it bears a strong resemblance to the Apple Vision Pro—I remain excited. Referred to as Project Moohan, Samsung’s headset is intended to compete directly with Apple’s premium Mixed Reality headset launched last year.
Additionally, Samsung’s device is expected to operate primarily in Mixed Reality rather than fully immersive Virtual Reality. However, its effectiveness in this area is yet to be determined.

Samsung’s headset will have to address two major issues consumers face when it comes to XR devices:
- Comfort
- And cost
In my view, the primary reason the Apple Vision Pro struggled to sell was its hefty price of $3,499.
Even the most dedicated XR fans may find it hard to justify that expense, particularly since the headset lacks support for most VR games.
Samsung must find a balance in pricing; otherwise, this headset may fail before it even launches. Comfort is also crucial because if users can’t wear your product for more than 30 minutes without feeling uncomfortable, it will likely be a flop.
Despite extensive engineering efforts and the previously mentioned exorbitant price, the Vision Pro still became uncomfortable after extended use. The prototypes of Samsung’s headset showcased at CES should clarify whether the company is genuinely developing one of today’s premier AR headsets or if it will suffer the same fate as the Vision Pro.
