This past month, Google launched the Android Canary release channel as a means for developers to try out experimental builds of Android. And now, the firm has pushed the Android Canary 2507 update, it’s only the second release in the new channel. This update is available now for some Pixel phones, including the Pixel 9 series, from which the Pixel 9a money-savings model is lower.
The Android Canary 2507 release is aimed at developers who want to play with Android APIs and features in their early stages. But Google says that’s cut bait, folks — these builds are super experimental and aren’t stable enough yet to be something you use every day. So bear in mind you should probably install that update on a spare Pixel and not as your daily driver.
Android Canary 2507: Supported Devices
According to Google, Android Canary 2507 brings in a new SDK (Software Development Kit) with actualized system images. It seems these are rolling out for the these Pixel devices:
- Google Pixel 9 series
- Google Pixel 9a
- Google Pixel 8 series
- Google Pixel Tablet
- Google Pixel Fold
- Google Pixel 7 series
- Google Pixel 6 series
These system images are largely meant for developers who want to test their apps with the tools and APIs in the latest version.
Android Canary 2507: What’s New?
The Android Canary 2507 update has a lot of fun experimental changes. One of the most interesting is the addition of support for graphical Linux apps. Courtesy of the Linux Terminal app that was brought out earlier this year. It is capable of booting the Debian Linux kernel on an Android OS. With the new Android Canary 2507 build, users are now said to support graphical Linux apps on their Pixel devices.
Another interesting feature that can be observed in Android Canary 2507 is a minor adjustment to the Dark Mode. According to the report, the update brings a new Expanded option in the theme settings that is able to force dark mode in apps that are not natively compatible with it. This is similar to the “override force-dark” switch in Android’s Developer Options, but is now more easily accessible in normal settings.
Warning: Highly Experimental Software
Google emphasized that this release isn’t for regular people—though who wouldn’t want all these exciting features? Version with bugs, unstability or unfinished functions! Although comprehensive internal testing occurs prior to release, actual public behavior might create problems. hence, it is not recommended to install Android Canary 2507 on your main / regular device.
But for the developers and enthusiasts who love the very latest Android tools, Android Canary 2507 is an incredible chance to see what’s up around the next corner.
