The race to the thinnest foldable lives on. It began when Ice Universe posted a video which compared the (rumored) Samsung Galaxy Z Fold3 to the Honor Magic V5 and claimed that Samsung’s phone is thinner. Ice’s measurement using a caliper was 8.79mm for the Galaxy and 8.95mm for the Magic V5, fanning the flames of which foldable is actually the thinnest.
It didn’t take long, however, for Honor to defend its Magic V5 thickness claim with photo evidence and some precise calipers. The brand stands firm on each of those measurements, and as far as we can tell they deliver (so we’re in line with the official 8.80 mm folded and 4.10 mm unfolded). Clearing the confusion, Honor pointed out that Ice’s thickness was most probably recorded from the slimmest of the bunch, the Ivory White Magic V5, which is thinner, 8.86mm to be exact, than the other three you’ll measure at 9.0mm when folded out.
And Honor adds that the Magic V5’s thickness as listed above doesn’t include the inner and outer screen protective film, which can be removed. Such films can even contribute modestly to the thickness of the structures; which can give rise to real-space effects.
The company also supplied context from its lab-proven techniques:
“Data is from the HONOR Lab. 8.8mm is the thickness of the folded Ivory White model. ( Overall thickness 。 does not include the inner and outer screen protective film;7 )advertised phone and search :b07tlgypfb 。 height of the camera 1 mm ( Not including the lens )
There might have a 1-2 cm acceptable difference due to manual measurement, thanks in advance for your understanding Manufacturer SIZE GUIDE: Please refer to our size chart IMAGE on the left column, instead of amazon size chart; Choose the size based on your body size Honor also figured out that manufacturing tolerances and measurements can cause slight variation. Indeed, it underlined that laboratory standard procedures were applied in order to obtain the published values of the Magic V5 thickness.

So, is Magic V5 thickness what makes it better than Galaxy Z Fold7? So, technically, the official number still makes Honor the leader. In day-to-day use, though, the 0.1mm difference is practically nonexistent — you’d probably never notice it when you’re actually holding and using the devices.
But in the competitive world of foldables, every millimeter and fraction thereof matters for branding bragging rights, and it seems as though Honor is doubling down on its word. The Magic V5 thinness may not win over all users, but it’s an indicator of a design to precision and engineering excellence.
