The Huawei Mate XT 2 is the second-generation triple folding phone from the company, and it has just been certified with support for 5G and satellite communications. The foldable device with model number GRL-AL20 has already made its appearance on China’s MIIT certification database which means it is likely to be introduced soon.
Huawei Mate XT 2 inherits the oversize that was first started by the original Mate XT (b.omodel GRL-AL10), with significant enhancements of networking and performance. Some of the highlights include support for 5G networks, as well as satellite calls which could be powered by Tiantong satellite technology that was found on the Mate X5 and Mate XT.
Huawei’s earlier foldables require the phone to be completely unfolded for satellite communication, though it’s not known whether the Mate XT 2 will let those features work when partially folded or closed. That would be a significant change, and also a very good one in terms of ease of use.
Retains 10.2-Inch Tri-Fold Display
When folded out, we could see the same 10.2-inch triple-fold display as before on the Huawei Mate XT 2.

According to reports it will be using Huawei’s new Tian Gong hinge that will allow for a thinner and more sturdy fold. The pin upgrade could provide better durability and crisp hinge feel on the Mate XT 2.
Kirin 9020 and Maleoon 920 GPU to Fuel the Foldable
Under the hood, the Huawei Mate XT 2 could be fueled by Kirin 9020 chipset which uses 1+3+4 architecture. This includes:
- A 2.5GHz prime Taishan core
- Three 2.15GHz mid-performance cores
- Four 1.6GHz efficiency cores
The Maleoon 920 GPU with 840MHz also seems like a good choice of graphics to power a foldable display – striking a good balance between performance and power efficiency.
eSIM Support May Debut
Another design change could be eSIM support, possibly getting rid of the physical SIM card. It is in line with this trend in the design of smartphones, that may also makes the Huawei Mate XT 2 more compact, almost a full hand-held.
Launch Expected Around September
– According to rumors, the Mate XT 2 will be announced by Huawei in September 2025, same time the iPhone 17 series will be goes official. It just so happens that Samsung is also working on its own triple-folding phone, and we could be in for a massive foldable face-off as a result.
The Huawei Mate XT 2 appears to be on track to become a next-generation triple fold model that will mix up next-generation hardware, groundbreaking comm tech and show-making design. At the time, a triple-fold display, satellite features and a performance bump were seemingly enough to make this foldable a major player in the next generation of futuristic smartphones.
