Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, recently shared a reel addressing a question from a user during his Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on the platform.
The inquiry pertained to improving the search functionality for Instagram Direct Messages (DMs), and Mosseri had some positive news to share.
The reel was in response to a question posed by user @ben_yanes during Mosseri’s previous AMA, where the user suggested implementing a search bar to filter keywords within the Request folder of Instagram’s inbox.
Creators on Instagram often receive numerous message requests, many of which are spam, while others are genuine. Introducing a search filter for the inbox could significantly enhance the user experience by helping people sift through these messages.
Mosseri acknowledged that this is a valuable idea and mentioned he would discuss it with his team, noting that it could potentially be rolled out in 2025.
He also indicated that Instagram Search has plenty of room for enhancement and will be receiving additional features in the upcoming year.
Currently, users can utilize the Search Box in their inbox to find chats with any user, but unlike WhatsApp, which allows keyword searches in chats, Instagram does not offer this capability.
A feature enabling users to search their inbox using specific keywords could be incredibly beneficial, especially for those who receive a high volume of message requests.
Genuine messages from interested individuals or businesses can easily be overshadowed by spam and fraudulent messages in the Request inbox. Having a search feature would enable users to quickly filter and access the messages that truly matter.
I believe that would be a fantastic feature for me. I manage a small art account on Instagram, and I receive a lot of spam, despite not being a major creator. I can only imagine the challenges that individuals with larger platforms face when trying to sift through relevant messages.
