It’s been iPhone-only for a while now, but Apple’s MagSafe magnetic inductive charging system has combined ease of use with high performance. But Android users have largely been ignored — until now. OnePlus and Oppo’s next sets of smartphones are said to be about to embrace magnetic wireless charging, no special cases required.
Magnetic Wireless Charging: Upcoming OnePlus & Oppo Phones to Come with Inbuilt Support
Key change in wireless tech The biggest change in wireless tech comes from a fresh leak by Digital Chat Station, a popular Chinese tipster on Weibo. The two companies are said to be in cooperation in order to have a magnetic wireless charging in their new phones, as per their report. It would be an interesting new feature that would work much like Apple’s MagSafe, but would be tailored for the Android world.
Today, magnetic accessories made by Oppo, such as the “Oppo Mag,” need magnetic cases to function. But the next change is that no case will be needed at all. Rather, magnetic wireless charging coils and housing will be inside the phone itself, which is tipped to include flagships like the OnePlus 15 and the Oppo Find X9.
But the engineering challenge behind this repurposing is even more impressive. Instead of running afoul of Apple’s MagSafe patents, Oppo is said to be working on a completely different solution. While it offers the same magnetic alignment and efficiency, it isn’t compatible with existing MagSafe accessories from Apple or third-party companies like Anker proponents.
This novel magnetic wireless charging application would live within the phone chassis and could interfere with the internal components inside, the battery being near the top of the list. WithOCIAccording to the leak, Oppo could have one-upped with a 6,800mAh or 7,000mAh battery on its next-gen models if the other tech was not added. But because of the space it occupies, a smaller battery might be employed. Thankfully, there is a solution to this loss in the form of silicon carbide (SiC) battery tech, which can provide improved efficiency and longevity even at lower capacities.
Even so, the net gain is obvious. Magnetic wireless charging makes using the phone a little more convenient, lines up perfectly every time, and all clears the way for using a charging port less auxiliary phone—lastly nudges the smartphone one step closer to port-free. With OnePlus and Oppo prepping for this innovation, Android users are finally catching up with what Apple introduced years ago.
“Today’s news further demonstrates the fast pace at which Qi2 wireless charging is being embraced industry-wide. Unlike traditional wireless charging, the Qi2 is capable of magnetic alignment, which allows it to charge faster and more reliably. It’s already used in Apple, under the MagSafe branding, and it’s great to see Android brands (in this case OnePlus and Oppo) following suit.
If the gossip is accurate, magnetic wireless charging may be a hallmark of Android flagships in the world of 2025 and beyond. The OnePlus 15 and Oppo Find X9 are expected to be the first to introduce this technology with other brands to follow the trail.
Magnetic wireless charging is officially no longer a concept of the future — it’s headed to Android, and it’s coming soon.
