MediaTek is reportedly developing a minor upgrade to its current flagship chipset, the Dimensity 9400. While this upcoming chipset, known as the Dimensity 9400+, will improve upon its predecessor, significant performance enhancements are not anticipated.
The name Dimensity 9400+ first surfaced late last year, accompanied by some specifications details. According to reliable leaker Digital Chat Station, the Dimensity 9400+ will feature an X925 super-core that operates at speeds of up to 3.7 GHz, compared to the 3.63 GHz clock speed of the X925 super-core in the standard Dimensity 9400.
This indicates that MediaTek’s next flagship chipset will likely offer only marginal performance increases.
The same tipster has now shared additional information regarding the Dimensity 9400+, specifically its expected release timeframe. It appears that MediaTek intends to launch the new Dimensity 9400+ flagship chipset in March.
Digital Chat Station also mentioned that two major smartphone manufacturers, Oppo and Vivo, have already selected MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ to power their upcoming devices. Reports suggest that the Oppo Find X8S and Vivo X200S will be among the first smartphones to feature MediaTek’s Dimensity 9400+ SoC (system-on-chip).
These developments suggest that MediaTek may be emulating Qualcomm’s strategy, as the US-based chipmaker recently introduced a minor upgrade to its flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Leading Version.
However, this new offering has not garnered widespread adoption among smartphone manufacturers, making it unlikely that Qualcomm will pursue a similar path in the future.
The overclocked version of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 has powered the RedMagic 9S Pro+ and briefly topped AnTuTu’s flagship performance rankings. When launched in March, MediaTek’s 9400+ chipset is expected to be the most powerful smartphone chipset available.
The key question remains whether it will persuade more than just two brands to incorporate it into their devices.
