Android 16 launched last month, starting with Pixel phones. Now, a few Android phone makers are gearing-up to share their Android 16 roll out plans. Motorola, which hasn’t yet made it official, is expected to deliver support for Android 16 to most of its devices as part of its last big software push.
These Motorola Phones Will Not Get Android 16
A host of Motorola Edge, Moto G and Razr series smartphones will likely receive Android 16 as the last OS update. This means that these handsets are out of the loop as far as major updates after Android 16 are concerned, but there may still be new security patches for a time yet.
Released with Android 13, the Motorola Edge 40 Pro is one of the flagship models that will reach the end of its OS journey with Android 16. Motorola Edge (2024) and Motorola ThinkPhone will also get Android 16 as their last major update.
Motorola’s 2023 foldable lineup is also impacted. Neither the Motorola Razr 40 (Razr 2023) nor the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra (Razr+ 2023) will receive Android version upgrades past Android 16. These foldables are still going to have security updates for a couple of years with Motorola’s leniency.
The mid-range Moto G85, Moto G55 and Moto G35 will also permanently be stuck on Android 16. Motorola’s tablet contender, the Pad 60 Pro for which it launched alongside Android 14, is expected to abandon all software support starting Q OS – Android 16.
So in all, here are the Moto phones that are getting Android 16 and are receiving their final update:
- Motorola Edge 40 Pro
- Motorola Edge (2024)
- Motorola ThinkPhone
- Motorola Razr 40 (Razr 2023)
- Motorola’s Razr 40 Ultra (Razr+ 2023) If you like the idea of a Razr but don’t actually hate yourself, the Motorola Razr 40 Ultra might be the Galaxy Z Flip 4 alternative for you.
- Moto G85
- Moto G55
- Moto G35
- Motorola Pad 60 Pro
All of the aforementioned devices won’t be supported by further Android versions past Android 16. They may, however, still occasionally receive security patches for some time.
Motorola Android 16 Rollout Timeline
Motorola has not announced its Android 16 release list we do have a list of Motorola phones we think will get the update next September or October. Newer Motorola handsets are expected to be supported first with older ones getting the update later in the cycle.
Notably, Moto is still updating many of its devices to Android 15 even after 16 has been released. That being the case, there are already reports indicating that the company has started rolling out the beta for Android 16 to a few models in several regions. If you have a supported Motorola phone, you may get an invite to the beta program in the near future.
Motorola has a history of being late to the party with its iPhone updates, and Android 16 is no exception. Nonetheless, those with compatible devices can trust that the new functionality and improvements introduced by Android 16 will reach their devices prior to receiving their last OS support from Motorola.
