In the near future, if everything falls into place and the necessary preparations are completed, the next Galaxy smartphone you get may be powered by OpenAI.
OpenAI, well-known for the popular ChatGPT project, is eager for Samsung to incorporate its AI innovations into future Galaxy models. The Galaxy S24, which was introduced at the beginning of 2024, was promoted specifically as the “AI phone.”
Its standout feature wasn’t its camera or battery, but rather its inclusion of the Galaxy AI feature set. Now, OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, seems keen to become part of Samsung’s growing ecosystem. According to industry sources, OpenAI has begun talks with Samsung to integrate its AI technology into Galaxy devices.
This is particularly timely as Samsung aims to implement Galaxy AI features on over 200 million devices in 2024 alone, with estimates indicating that the platform could extend to billions of devices in just a few years.
The potential collaboration resembles OpenAI’s recent agreement with Apple, which now integrates its technology to support various AI features on the latest iPhone models.
However, any partnership between Samsung and OpenAI would need to be approached cautiously, especially considering Samsung’s current relationship with Google. This careful balance is even more important as Samsung works on AI-enhanced AR glasses that utilize Google’s Gemini technology.
These discussions come after previous engagements between the companies, particularly OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s visit to Samsung’s semiconductor facilities to explore potential collaborations in AI chip development.
A wider partnership could provide OpenAI with significant access to Samsung’s extensive mobile device market while also enhancing Samsung’s AI capabilities. I believe that most users won’t be particularly concerned about whether the AI features in their phones come from Google or OpenAI; they simply want the AI to work seamlessly whenever they need it.
