GMP Recently Reported a Shocking Issue With the Ryzen 9 9950X CPU, While Testing Not One But Two, CPUs Fused Under Stress Tests Even with cooling measures such as extra fans in open air, proper ventilation, and no overclocking, both CPUs fried and created a big yellow spot on the pin side.
The first incident took place in February, followed by the second a few days ago. Both systems were built around an ASUS B650 chipset motherboard – the ASUS Prime B650M-K (BIOS 3057) and ASUS Prime B650M-A WiFi (BIOS 3278). These are budget boards, but they do well enough to run high-end processors at stock settings.
Regardless GMP did a good job cooling the CPU with the Noctua NH-U9S single-tower cooler. Low room temperature was also maintained, under 20 °C in the first case and a little over 20 °C in the second. Additional fans and correct air flow were installed, so the CPU failures were even more perplexing.
The funny thing is that its former counterpart—Ryzen 9 7950X—never failed like that even when it was getting hotter for a longer period. GMP suggests that the Ryzen 9 9950X may have pulled more than expected power under stress testing, which would explain the failures. Another possible culprit could be heatsink mounting – ‘offset’ mounting as recommended by Noctua for the second test may have led to some voids in the thermal paste application and thus uneven distribution of heat.
And with heatsink mounting positioned correctly in the first test, the CPU still cooked, which could mean it is the problem of the Ryzen 9 9950X series architecture or how it interacts with certain kind of motherboards. There’s no official word for such reoccurring failures, but it’s quite worrying news for high-end Ryzen users.
YouTubers, gamers and folks who like shiny new hardware should be wary when subjecting the Ryzen 9 9950X to intensive stress workloads, as the two incidents show that good cooling and normal configurations fail to keep some flagship CPUs safe under severe stress.
FAQ
The cause itself is unknown, although the reason might be some things such as over voltage, heatsink problems, and smearing of thermal paste.
No, both CPUs were running at stock with no overclocking or overvolting.
I had no issues with cooling with a noctua nh u9s and extra fan but it could have been the mounting or paste.
Both happened on ASUS B650 MB but the issue doesn’t appear to affect Ryzen 9 9950X under stress testing at all, it looks like it is specific to motherboard.
No, the previous 7950X went hotter and longer without such issues.
