The Apple Vision Pro was always designed to be more than just a basic Mixed Reality headset. However, due to the technological constraints of the present, Apple was unable to fully realize its vision (pun intended), resulting in the Vision Pro being a compromise. Recently, the company has reached a significant milestone that could pave the way for more advanced successors to the Vision Pro. Apple is set to launch its own in-house cellular modem with the upcoming revamped iPhone SE.

This represents a major advancement for the entire Apple ecosystem, as the company has long aspired to develop its own modems.

This move not only has the potential to greatly benefit Apple’s devices—similar to the impact of Apple silicon—but also reduces the company’s dependence on Qualcomm. Manufacturing costs are expected to decrease as well, especially given Apple’s dissatisfaction with Qualcomm’s licensing fees.

According to industry insider Mark Gurman from Bloomberg, Apple is considering integrating its new chips into future Vision Pro headsets. Adding cellular capabilities to the headset would bring it closer to Apple’s original vision. Nevertheless, the headset still faces significant challenges in gaining market share.

The Vision Pro is uncomfortable for many users, similar to numerous other VR headsets. Few people can tolerate using an XR (Extended Reality) device for extended periods, putting the Vision Pro at a significant disadvantage compared to the iPhone.

Even if it were somehow lighter and smaller, it would likely still see less usage. While glasses appear ordinary, headsets are quite conspicuous in public, leading most individuals to prefer their phones instead. Additionally, a large portion of the population remains unconvinced about VR and would rather continue using their iPhones.

However, the introduction of cellular service in future Vision Pro models could represent a groundbreaking advancement for headset users. Currently regarded as one of the best AR headsets available, it could potentially become the top choice if it becomes less bulky, incorporates new features, and reduces its high price tag.
