The official version of the Vivo Vision MR has finally launched in China – this headset has been turning heads as it’s lighter, more comfortable and cheaper than the Apple Vision Pro headset. At a mere 14 oz, the Vivo Vision MR is considerably smaller and lighter than both Apple’s 21+ oz headset and Meta Quest 3 series.

With an 8K micro-OLED display, the Vivo Vision MR generates a virtual IMAX-sized screen. Both eyes get 3840 x 3552 pixels, narrowly edging out Apple’s 3660 x 3200 pixels per eye. Vivo claims 94% of DCI-P3 coverage, Delta E < 2 color accuracy and accurate lens alignment to reduce wear and tear during prolonged use.

Running Qualcomm Snapdragon XR2+ Gen 2, the Vivo Vision MR headset has the eye-tracking accuracy of 1.5 degree and a 175-degree vertical tracking angle. OriginOS Vision enables users to freely interact with virtual space through hand and finger gestures. Light frame and ring strap bring comfortable wearing, relieve long-time wearing headache in daily on-line meetings, make Vivo Vision MR headset comfortable to wear in VR and mixed-reality applications over long periods.

Its virtual IMAX screen, simulated by the Vivo Vision MR, can reach 118 ft (or about 1400 inches), and its 3D gaming, virtual movie theaters and productivity applications all find new depths. The latency is said to be just 13ms and users can freely position multiple virtual windows with the OriginOS Vision that also rather cleverly supports spatial videos and photos, as well as a virtual surface to allow for a more productive mixed-reality experience.

Hands-on comparisons show the Vivo Vision MR headset have very similar features to that of the Apple Vision Pro, yet it has the edge in weight and comfort. Where Apple supports an IPD range of 51-75mm, Vivo supports 57-71. The Vivo Vision MR has 11 cameras, and promises a similar image quality to Apple’s headset. Finger gestures, virtual space management and physical volume controls are all on offer, although Vivo does feature two physical volume adjustment buttons.

The 90Hz 8K micro-OLED display offers excellent brightness and color accuracy, practically at a Dolby Vision cinema quality. Vivo cites 3D gaming as a prominent use case. With a notch lower spec-ed chipset, the Vivo Vision MR does offer pretty seamless blending of Virtual objects and physical space along with hand moments in games. The addition of a dedicated VR game controller, for Steam, also comes in handy, making the gaming environment that much more attractive.

The Vivo Vision MR headset is not available to general consumers as of now, but it is available as a Discovery Edition to some early reviewers and you might be able to experience it in Vivo stores in China. The price and lighter weight are intended to show that Vivo wants to make mixed-reality more accessible than Apple’s premium-priced Vision Pro, according to the people. All in all, the Vivo Vision MR headset is a huge leap forward for mixed-reality hardware, as it offers comfort, affordability and high-resolution visuals in one package.
